obtaining driver's license

Please excuse the inconsistent use of the word 'licenc/se' as I keep switching between American and British English. I got confused and gave up.

On Mondays to Thursdays and Saturdays, the service counters at the JPD Headquarters, Sg Akar Training and Driving Test Complex, Tutong Branch, Belait Branch and Temburong Branch will operate from 8:00AM - 11:30AM and 1:30PM to 3:00PM.

On Fridays, the normal operating hours for the service counters at the JPD Headquarters located in Jalan Beribi, Gadong, are from 8am to 11:30AM for renewal of driving licenses, vehicle licenses and replacement of faded road taxes.

OBTAINING A DRIVER'S LICENSE

1. Apply for a Provisional License in the Land Transport building in Sungai Akar. Bring your passport and IC, fill-up a form, and pay BND $5.

The provisional license is only a learner's permit, you are not legally allowed to drive without a licensed instructor.

Also note that there are not many instructors, and only a few of them can teach in English.

2. You will need a minimum of 6 hours lecture on safety as well as road signs and regulations. This costs BND $120. Usually, you will be given a total of 3 classes with each class lasting 2 hours. 3. After completing the hours, you will be given a written/law test. Brought along should be your IC and temporary license. The test consists of an MCQ of 60 questions. There are two parts. The first part tests your knowledge on road signs and the second part tests your safety and road knowledge. You will have to answer all the questions in the first part correctly, otherwise you will fail. The second part allows a maximum of 10 (to be updated) mistakes.

You may schedule a retest after a week in case you fail. It is an additional fee of BND $10. 4. Days or sometimes weeks later, you will be phoned by your instructor's administrator, informing you whether you have passed or failed. If a considerably long time passes and they have not telephoned you, it is advisable for you to telephone them. You may begin driving lessons once you pass. They cost BND $15 per hour. You will need at least 10 or 15 hours of lessons before you are allowed a driving test, totalling the cost to BND $150 or BND $225.

5. Only when you pass the driving test can you finally apply for a Driver's License. Brought along should be your IC, temporary license and BND $160 which covers the fee of your test. If you fail, then you will have to wait at least 2 months before you are allowed a resit.

Total payment is:- BND $120 + BND $150 + BND $160 = BND $430

or

BND $120 + BND $225 + BND $160 = BND $505

* Keep note: In sitting for your writing and driving tests, you are dissuaded from having long hair (for men) and wearing:

- rubber slippers, sandals and boots;

- short pants;

- short skirts;

- t-shirts without collars;

- ripped pants and;

- jeans.
